The Weight Loss Detox Diet

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

Weight loss detox diets have become very popular with celebrities, because they allow people to lose weight quickly, usually about 5-7 pounds in 1-2 weeks. That sounds great, but like most fads, people put the weight back on as soon as the detox is over. Why? Because, they aren't eating anything. It is basically a liquid diet, like the very popular lemonade diet. They are severe calorie deficient detox diets that allow the body to lose significant weight in a very short period of time. But, as soon as you start eating again, all the weight comes back. That may work for an actress who needs to look great for 1 scene, but that won't work for you assuming you want to keep the weight off.

The Weight Loss Detox Diet

The good news is that there is a way to detox and lose weight which will not only keep the weight off, but insure you get maximum health benefits... For example, if you do a detox correctly, you can expect to see your skin clear up, cellulite and fat will start to melt away, you should have very restful sleep, and strong, sustained energy throughout the day. Let's learn more about this very specific weight loss detox, not to be confused with the other fads and scams out there right now. It follows two steps...

Step 1

To give your body the tools it needs to detoxify, cleanse and regenerate, a weight loss detox diet must give the body even more vitamins, minerals and nutrients than normal. This means that fasting is NOT a good choice. You want to eat foods rich in essential nutrients and antioxidants that enable your body to flush the toxins and pollutants that have accumulated over your lifetime. By eating these foods, you will detox safely and also lose weight. The foods you will be eating are rich in nutrients, high in fiber, and low in fat. You can expect to lose between 3-7 pounds over a 7-10 day period. And, you will not gain the weight back. Why? Because, you aren't starving yourself. Your body will be relinquishing the fat in a healthy way. The best part is that you will see many other benefits besides weight loss. You will also lower your cholesterol, blood pressure, boost your immune system, have much more energy etc...

A great example of this is Vitamin C. Vitamin C has been shown in many, many studies to help in weight reduction. According to researchers from Arizona State University, individuals consuming sufficient amounts of vitamin C oxidize (burn) 30% more fat during moderate exercise than those who consume insufficient amounts. In addition, too little vitamin C in the bloodstream has been shown to correlate with increased body fat and waist measurements. This is the best source of whole food, all natural vitamin C anywhere. Please, see The Weight Loss Detox Diet below to learn more...

Step 2

The second step is to use some powerful, organic superfoods and herbs to speed up and magnify the process of detoxing and losing weight. Use the highest quality herbs well known for their ability to increase the metabolism and remove fat from the body. Specific herbs are able to lower blood pressure and build strength in the walls of the veins and arteries which is very important for protecting the heart from excess fat. The combination of herbal formulas that can help the body lose weight and protect the heart are ideal for a weight loss reduction program. Please, see below to learn more...

Atkins Vs Paleo - What Works and What Doesn't

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

Recently I've seen a lot of websites and books make comparisons between the Paleo Diet and the Atkins diet. "It's like Atkins," they say, "but you can eat fruit!" I understand that a lot of people in our community are trying to convert non-believers from other diets. And I understand that having someone make the switch from Atkins to Paleo probably isn't much of a stretch. But in my opinion, trying to say the Atkins Diet is like the Paleo Diet doesn't do the Paleo Diet any favors and ignores the key concepts of the diet. It's really not like the Atkins Diet at all.

Atkins Vs Paleo - What Works and What Doesn't

The Atkins Diet is NOT the Paleo Diet

The Atkins Diet, for most people, is not a life-long endeavor. It's not a lifestyle. It's a way to cut weight by keeping your carbohydrates as close to zero as possible. I recently spoke to someone that mentioned she was going to do Atkins (again) because she was happy with her weight loss in Phase 1. And Phase 1 is understandably where most people fall off the Atkins wagon. Nobody wants to eat bacon and sausage every day of their life because eating a grape fruit would send their body out of ketosis and kill their weight loss.

The Paleo Diet isn't based on counting carbohydrates, or grams of fat, or even calories. It is based on the principle that you should eat what our ancestors ate. And that's it. Our ancestors didn't eat pre-packaged, sodium-rich "meat products" -- they ate MEAT. While these meat-products are fine on the Atkins diet as long as they don't add to your carbohydrate count, someone following a paleolithic lifestyle would assuredly pass on them. Our ancestors didn't eat Whole Grain Wheat toast or "Heart-Healthy" Cheerios, they ate wholesome vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

There is no induction phase for the Paleo Diet.

You don't lose weight rapidly for 2 weeks and then plateau off.Weight loss with paleo happens all the time throughout the course of your life until you reach your ideal body weight. Eating natural foods, you will find it extremely hard to reach enough calories to gain any weight and the closer you are to your ideal weight, the less calories your body will need to consume, the less you will eat.

Foods that are calorie dense (such as meats) will keep you full for hours, making you eat less of them. Between meals you can snack on fruits and vegetables that provide essential nutrients and vitamins but won't pack on the calories. Some vegetables and most fruits are severely limited or banned on the Atkins diet because of their natural carbohydrates.

In my experience on the Atkins Diet, there was never really a time that I didn't crave cakes, or sweets, or fruit. I tried to block them out. I tried to get my mind off of them. But I always wanted them.

On the Paleo Diet you don't miss out on the sweet taste of fruit -- because you can eat as much of it as you want. You don't miss eating cakes because you can make your own cakes without wheat flour. Pizza? You can eat that, too, as long as you make it yourself using natural ingredients. The best part of Paleo is the community. If you have a craving for something, you can be sure that someone else has made a paleo variation of it and posted it on the internet.

In the first four months after starting the Paleolithic Diet, I had lost over 40lbs and my wife had lost over 50lbs, eating delicious food that we wanted to eat.

The Paleo Diet is for Designed for Your Health

While the Atkins diet may be healthier for you than eating a bag of Doritos, you're still loading your body with unnatural preservatives, sodium, and other industrial garbage while never really getting the essential nutrients your body needs to thrive.

There is anecdotal evidence that the Paleo Diet treats or can even cure illnesses like cancer, Rheumatoid arthritis, Multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease and adult onset (Type 2) diabetes.

In my own case, the Paleo Diet cured me of GERD and allowed me to stop taking all of my prescribed medications.

Conclusion

As you can see, the Paleo Diet and the Atkins Diet are two diametrically opposed diets. They may be similar in that they both condone eating meat, but that's really where the similarities end, as each diet comes to that conclusion through vastly different philosophies. Based on my own experiences with both diets, I choose the Paleo Diet for Life.

The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

In the Zone by Dr. Barry Sears and Protein Power by Drs. Eades introduced me to the concept that the best diet for modern people is the diet that was best for paleolithic people, because our bodies are virtually the same as they were before the agricultural revolution of 10,000 years ago.

The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson

Since the mid 1990s, other diets have improved on or clarified this idea, such as the Paleo. Now a former world-class marathon runner and triathlete who has studied health, fitness and nutrition has come up with The Primal Blueprint.

First of all, let's be clear. The biggest enemy to our health is excess carbohydrates -- starches and sugars that drive our insulin up to high levels.

So, frankly, all these diets have adherents who have lost weight on them, improved their energy and increased their health -- and that makes sense, because all of them are a great deal better than what Sisson calls SAD - Standard American Diet.

He has been writing articles on his site Mark's Daily Apple, and he and I both encourage you to browse those articles, because they contain a lot of information not contained in the book.

If I had one major complaint about this book, it's that. I'd rather have seen it longer and more complete. Sisson and his editors evidently decided it'd do better if it were shorter and more concise to get the main points across.

But by browsing his blog I found important details on training and diet that were not included in this book.

His goal is to help us improve our health and chances of living a lot longer (without making any illegal medical claims). So he comes up with ten rules of health, many of which are common sense (though admittedly that's not as common as it used to be), such as relaxing and not doing stupid things. Getting sunshine does go against conventional wisdom and advice. But the heart of the blueprint lies in diet and exercise.

Unlike other diet plans that recommend but don't include exercise, he makes exercise a part of the total blueprint. Of course, many people will do part but not all. But he also says that doing it eighty percent gives good results.

He advises not eating grains at all. Dr. Barry Sears allows grains if you keep the amounts low enough. Sisson throws them all out, even the politically correct ones, including wheat, corn, rice, amaranth, barley, quinoa, oatmeal, beer and soy.

He is in favor of grass-fed meal and eggs including the yolks. On his site (though not unfortunately in the book) he explains how grass-fed beef and organic eggs get around the arachidonic acid issue Barry Sears brings up (but Sears never addresses grass-fed beef or organic eggs).

His recommendation for amounts of carbohydrates works out to eating less of them than the Zone, though a lot more than Atkins. And he doesn't enforce a balance at every meal, just that you keep daily consumption of carbs within the right amounts.

His exercise prescriptions validate what I'd learned from other sources, that long aerobic exercise is too stressful. Short bouts of intense sprints are better for your heart and lungs. And you need to do some heavy lifting.

Eats lots of vegetables, some fruit, and fish and meat and nuts. He's much less judgmental than many health authors. If it works for you, do it. If not, not. He also advises Intermittent Fasting, though only if it works well for you. Barry Sears says to not go hungry. But I'm sure that cave people did have to go without food for long periods.

One gripe about the book - he spends lots of space describing a typical cave family and their health habits versus a modern family. It takes up too much space.

I've long been a fan of the Zone and followed it when I could, and did get results. But I believe the Primal Blueprint is even better.

No Calorie Counting Diet

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

Diets don't work for various reasons. Often times they are too restrictive and only cause you to slip-up and go back to your old ways. One of the most restrictive diets are those that require you to count calories. I have tried counting calories before and gave up within a week. Life is busy enough without having to account for every calorie that you eat.

No Calorie Counting Diet

I've come across many diets but have ultimately realized that the best way to lose weight without counting calories is by cutting out the foods that keep you fat. These foods are carbs such as bread, rice, baked goods, and other processed food. You don't need to follow a diet but make an important lifestyle change. Two eating plans that I recommend are the paleolithic diet and the clean eating diet. Neither require any calorie counting (unless you want to.)

The paleolithic diet is based upon the eating plan of the hunter-gatherer. This diet consists mainly of meat, vegetables, fruit, and nuts. The clean eating diet is similar excluding all processed foods. Just like any diet, it's easy to start but even easier to slip and eat foods you shouldn't.

If you're used to eating anything you want, you can make the transition easier by slowly incorporating your new way of eating. As you may notice, both diets avoid processed food (which aren't very healthy anyway) so cutting back gradually on junk food and fast food will allow you to become accustomed to eating the proper foods without feeling guilty every time you "cheat."

The best thing about eating clean or following the paleo diet is that you don't have to keep track of calories. Another diet that makes the transition to healthier eating much easier is the "Every Other Day Diet" by Jon Benson. You can eat your favorite foods without worrying about calories.

Why Go Paleo?

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

Okay you may be wondering what the point of going on a paleolithic diet is. Heck you may even be wondering what on earth the diet involves. This is where I come in. I used to be like most people in the west, Fat, Unhealthy and tired all the time. That was until one day I decided to take action. I thought that life can't be this hard. Why are some people living busy lives yet are able to keep their bodies in prime condition while others struggle to maintain the balance.

Why Go Paleo?

It was a question that prompted me to search and find the answer. And I did. I was sceptical at first as it was based on ideas that weren't conventional, like eating six small meals a day etc. But it wasn't anything too drastic or out of the ordinary and so I jumped on the wagon thinking that I had nothing to lose by trying it out. And It was the best decision that I had ever made. Within 3 weeks I had effortlessly stripped 15 pounds of unwanted fat from my body. I was eating delicious food and best of all I was always full and satisfied.

So called healthy diets that I had tried in the past always resulted in me starving and struggling to get through the day. And the result a few pounds being shed off that usually ended up returning once I couldn't take it anymore. It makes sense, even though I was sceptical at first. Our ancestors eat all natural things such as meat and vegetables, berrys and nuts. This allowed them to thrive and remain effortlessly fit.

The same however is not true in today's society. Most of the food we find in supermarkets today, didn't exist 50 years ago, let alone 10,000 years ago just before the agricultural revolution. So do you want to feel energetic, thrive through your days, remain full and satisfied at all times, while eating delicious foods? Then I would recommend that you go primal and start enjoying foods that nature intended you to eat.

So You Want to Lose Weight Effortlessly?

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

Okay so when you say that you want to lose weight most people mean that they want to lose that extra unwanted fat, while maintaining muscle. BUT often the conventional normal ways to do such doesn't work. People end up losing muscle while retaining that ugly fat.

So You Want to Lose Weight Effortlessly?

Conventional fitness theories such as excessive cardio, and low fat diets usually result in this unwanted muscle loss and fat retention. Of course if that is what you want, an undernourished skinny fat look, then continue doing things the way that you are doing them. But of course you do not want that now, do you? You want a body that others will admire. Strong lean, maintaining speed and strength. to achieve this however you will need a lot of protein, as muscle is super hungry for that energy and its this energy that will be needed if you are wanted to maintain and put on muscle while losing that extra fat.

First step, scrap the weighing scale. You will not be needing these anymore to monitor your weight loss. The following is what you will need to focus on to supersize your muscle while losing that fat.

Eyes, once a week you need to strip in front of the mirror, and take pictures of your whole body. doing this on a daily basis will not work as your body changes will not be noticeable in such as short space of time. weekly is a good timing to notice changes. Make sure to check for fat lumps, flabby chests and underarms. These are all signs that you are losing muscle while keeping the fat.

Ears, okay so if you are losing the fat and gaining the muscle then you will be noticed by the people that surround you. they will compliment you and say things like 'you have lost weight!!' and 'you look way healthier' these are signs that you are doing well and are on track.

Belts, if you are losing the fat and keeping the muscle then that means you will need to go shopping for new jeans. new jeans new belts means that you are on track, congrats.

Weights, are you pumping up the weights as you progress? if you are struggling to maintain the weights that you once used to use with ease, then its a major sign that you are losing muscle. not a good sign.

So how exactly do you maintain muscle and reduce fat? eat a high fat, moderate protein, and low carb diet. Lift heavy in the gym and occasionally (meaning like once a week) do a sprint. this is a simple yet effective technique to increase muscle and lose that ugly extra fat. below are some more details on what you can do:

Do intermittent fasting, avoid too much cardio, Avoid Excess Chronic Cardio, sprint on occasion, lift heavy when doing weights, don't eat too much food (eat when hungry, stop when full) That's all there is to it. Simple yet effective way to pack on more muscle and lose that extra fat. Check out http://www.mypaleocookbook.com for more nutritional advice.

How the Power of Prevention Can Help Your Health Savings Account Grow

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

A majority of medical expenditures in this country pay for treatment of chronic conditions that are mostly preventable. Unfortunately, most people don't take their health seriously until after they get sick. Simply by eating well and exercising, you can avoid the medical conditions and expenses that affect the majority of Americans, allowing the money in your Health Savings Account to continue growing tax-free.

How the Power of Prevention Can Help Your Health Savings Account Grow

Only You Can Prevent Heart Disease, Cancer, Diabetes...

Most of us go through our lives stuck in our lifestyle patterns, with no idea of the power we have to positively influence our own health. And so by the time we're in our 40's most of us are on at least one regular medication. By the time we're in our 60's over 85% of all Americans have at least one degenerative disease. And by the time we are in our 70's we're dead.

But in fact, a majority of the diseases people suffer from as they age are almost totally preventable.

- Cancer: Researchers from the National Cancer Institute believe that 80-95% of all cancer cases are due to environmental and lifestyle causes, and are thus preventable. Diet may be involved in at least half of all cancers, and one third of all cancers are linked to obesity.

- Dementia: Mark Houston, M.D., Medical Director at Hypertension and Vascular Biology Institute at Saint Thomas Hospital and Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, estimates that 95% of all dementia is preventable with a lifestyle approach.

- Heart disease: Numerous studies indicate that 90% - 99% of all heart disease may be preventable.

- Diabetes: One of the nation's most renowned health researchers, Harvard University's Walter Willet, has estimated that 92% of type-2 diabetes is preventable.

How to Eat

Probably the very most important factor that can positively affect the health of most people is changing the way they eat. There are many, mostly conflicting theories about what kind of diet is the healthiest. In my opinion, the only one that really makes sense is to eat according to the way we evolved to eat.

The idea of "Paleolithic Nutrition" was first published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1985 in an article by Dr. S. Boyd Eaton. Since then it has been popularized by Loren Cordain, Ph.D., in his book, The Paleo Diet, and studied by nutritional scientists all over the world. The premise is simple: Our genes determine our nutritional needs.

For over 2.5 million years, humans evolved as hunter-gatherers, and the selective pressures of their lifestyle and diet determined the genes that we have today. Our genetic make-up is exquisitely tuned to function best on the foods that we evolved to eat.

A mere 500 generations ago the Agricultural Revolution brought sudden and dramatic change to our diets, and the changes are continuing to this day. But our genes haven't managed to keep pace with the change.

Today approximately 2/3 of the foods we eat were those never encountered by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. The result is high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and a host of other ills that we should not have to suffer.

While most of us do not have access to large wild game and wild-harvested organic produce, the more closely we can mimic the foods that our ancestors ate the better health we will have. So simply base your meals around a lot of fruits and vegetables, along with some lean protein.

You could start by eating eggs and cantaloupe for breakfast. Lunch could consist of a large salad with grilled chicken. For dinner have some wild salmon, asparagus, and salad. Finish off the meal with a big bowl of fresh blueberries.

Exercise

Everyone knows that exercise is good for them, but who wants to spend an hour jogging everyday. (Some people do, but most don't have the time or desire to go out jogging for an hour every day). What does work to give you the maximum benefit for the least amount of time is exercise with intensity.

So if it's okay with your doctor, go out and exercise like you mean it. Run wind sprints, lift weights, and exert yourself. And get it done in 30 minutes or less. Combined with the right diet, this kind of exercise will get the most results for the least effort. You will gain more muscle and lose more fat than if you were going out for long slow jogs, and you'll feel great!

There are of course other factors that affect your health, including stress, sleep, clean air and water, and even genetics. But there's nothing you can do that will have more impact than eating a good diet and being active.

So be proactive, with both your money and your health. Take advantage of the incredible tax and wealth-building benefits of a Health Savings Account (HSA) by funding it fully every year. And take the right lifestyle measures to avoid the preventable diseases that affect most people as they age. Then in your retirement, you can enjoy the good health and accumulated wealth in your HSA that you so rightly deserve.

What Is the Paleo Diet? Detailed Information About Paleo Diet

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

A lot of diets that are on the market today will limit your intake of carbohydrates; others will limit your meat and protein consumption. No matter which diet plan you choose, be sure to familiarize yourself with the details of the diet and what research it is based on. One of the most popular diets is the Paleo diet; but what exactly is it? The Paleo diet is a unique way of eating that is very similar to the way our ancestors in the Stone Age lived - relying on the basic food groups that were available to them.

What Is the Paleo Diet? Detailed Information About Paleo Diet

The Paleolithic diet refers to the Stone Age era; often referred to as the "Hunter Gatherer Diet" as well. This diet consists mainly of meat, fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds. It mimics the way our ancestors had to eat; often with long periods of fasting in-between meals and a moderately active daily routine. There are a few food sources that you would need to avoid, such as dairy products, grains, processed foods and fatty meat products. These items were not available in the Stone Age so we should not be consuming it either. Although it might seem that there are a lot of restrictions when it comes to the Paleo diet, there are still a lot of healthy and good tasting recipes that you can use; serving delicious Paleo meals to your whole family.

The Paleo diet is high in protein; focusing mainly on meat products, seafood, fruits, vegetables and nuts; and it is also very popular with health professionals and athletes. Fruit and vegetables can be eaten freely on this diet; just take care to avoid the starchy veggies like potatoes. Fruit and vegetables are healthy snack options and you can add them to any meal. This is one of the reasons why the Paleo diet is so healthy.

One of the best benefits of the Paleo diet is the additional weight loss that you might experience. The diet is naturally low in carbohydrates and high in protein; it will also gradually increase your metabolism over time. This will allow you to lose weight naturally; up to 15 pounds in the first 6 months. If you add an additional exercise program to your daily routine, your weight loss efforts will increase. The diet is also naturally high in fiber, which is very good for your digestive system.

One of the most common causes of food allergies and digestive problems is bad eating habits; and these usually include dairy and grain products. The Paleo diet is wheat and dairy free; making it a very healthy option for the whole family. The meals are also low in saturated fat and high in fiber. Your energy levels will naturally increase as well.

With so many meal options and all the health benefits associated with it, the Paleo diet is a must for anyone looking to slim down, increase energy and reduce their risk of heart disease and cancers.

Banana Diet - 1 of the Easiest Ways to Lose Weight If You Do it Right

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

The banana diet is 1 of the best and easiest ways to help boost your weight loss efforts. It appears there are many versions of this diet... and I also have a version of this diet. A lot of the other versions of this diet just seem plain silly and not very practical.

Banana Diet - 1 of the Easiest Ways to Lose Weight If You Do it Right

Here's an easy to use version that will give you slow, steady weight loss. This is not an extreme diet like you may think.

You may think that the banana diet consists of eating just bananas all day. Wrong! Obviously that isn't very practical or smart. There is just 1 main rule to this diet and another general rule...

Rule #1: Eat 1-2 bananas before each meal... minimum of 3 times a day.

Very simple, huh? Not much to think about. If you eat, you're going to eat 1-2 bananas before your meal. Practical, easy, healthy, and not much to remember.

Before breakfast, eat 2 bananas. Before lunch, eat 2 bananas. Before dinner, eat 1 banana. So you eat 5 total bananas a day.

Rule #2: Eat whatever you want for meals.

This rule is simple... eat whatever you want, just as long as you eat 2 bananas before breakfast, 2 bananas before lunch, and 1 banana before dinner. Obviously eating healthier than normal would help your weight loss efforts even more, but it's not 100% necessary.

Bonus Rule: You can replace 1 banana with an apple before breakfast and lunch.

As mentioned, you can replace a banana with an apple before breakfast and lunch. This is to help relieve possible boredom. Nothing more.

I honestly don't know how much weight you will lose on this or any other diets that use bananas, however you should notice a steady weight loss. It won't be extremely fast, so if that's what you're looking for... forget the banana diet.

The Lemon Juice Diet - Lemon Juice to Lose Weight

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

The lemon juice diet, which deals with lemon cayenne pepper cleaning and lemon juice to lose weight is also referred to as the Master Cleanse Secrets diet, and was introduced to the public in 1941 by Stanley Burroughs. In order to teach the modern audience about the successful detox, Peter Glickman spoke of the diet in his book: 'Lose Weight, Have More Energy, and Be Happier in 10 Days'.

The Lemon Juice Diet - Lemon Juice to Lose Weight

Celebrities Use It

The Master Cleanse diet has been used by many people, including celebrities. Beyonce Knolls is one of the most popular celebrities to have the most luck with the lemon juice program. Beyonce tried to program after receiving a role in the film 'Dreamgirls' as a slim-figured female. She spoke of her success on the Oprah Winfrey Show by stating that she lost a total of 20 pounds in a short time period.

Terrible Toxins

On a daily basis, our body intakes many chemicals and toxins. In turn, this can harm our bodies and cause irritation, such as bowel constipation, body aches and pains, exhaustion, irritability, and other strenuous side effects. One of the largest problems with the toxins is the fact that the body can become obese.

Other body parts that can be affected by the harmful toxins are the:

*Colon

*Liver

*Kidneys

*Gall Bladder

What Is This All About

The lemon juice diet is basically a short fasting method in which the poisons in the body can be flushed out with lemon cayenne pepper cleaning and lemon juice to lose weight. The recommended time limit for the fasting is 10 days. During this time, the user drinks sea salt water in the morning to help get the bowel moving. This is followed by the lemon juice mixture during the day and then a laxative tea at night.

The lemon mixture is made up of organic lemon juice to lose weight, lemon cayenne pepper cleaning, organic maple syrup, and filtered water. No solid foods can be consumed during this time. Many people find the first two days to be the hardest. They usually have a constant yearning to chew something. Crushed ice can help this. After they get over the first hump, the results will start to show.

All Kinds Of Benefits

There are many other benefits besides the detoxifying of poisons from the body. Many users of the lemon juice diet program have reported a less craving for fast food, as well as a decrease in existing pains throughout the body.

This is due to the fact that there has been a release of pressure and irritation in the nerves and blood vessels. Other users have reported reduced acne and improvement in skin texture.

It is urged that if you want to maintain the weight loss that you accomplish after the lemon juice diet, then you will need to continue a healthy lifestyle afterwards. Keep in mind that a larger percentage of your weight loss will be water weight.

You can keep this type of weight gain off by avoiding foods high in sodium. Either way, you will be very pleased with the Master Cleanse diet, as long as you stick to the recommended lemon juice diet schedule.

Basic Strength Training (Part 2)

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

As most of you may know, there are various goals in the sport of bodybuilding. Particular goals can include strength, power, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, and performance enhancement. To gain each, there are principles that must be followed. I'm going to teach you the principles necessary for a drastic transformation in any of these categories starting with the basics.

Basic Strength Training (Part 2)

**Compound Movements
Compound exercises are the most important exercises in an exercise program. For personal program and design, there needs to be a base of strength developed so that you have an idea on what to do while in the gym. Some of you may be puzzled by "compound movements" and some of you may know exactly what they are. First off, a "compound" movement is NOT defined as an exercise that uses various muscle groups. While this IS true and a huge plus of a compound movement; isolations and every other movement of the human body require utilization of more than one muscle group, as well. If you would lie down on your bed and lay perfectly fat, then raise your pointer finger you would use muscle groups from more than one source; first off, you would use your grip strength; second, you'd use strength from your forearm extensor muscles (brachioradialis, supinator, abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis longus). People far too often think the only type of contraction a muscle makes is concentric; it is inaccurate. The muscle makes three contractions: eccentric, concentric, and isometric. In some exercises, muscles are worked only isometrically; for instance, the upper back muscles during the back squat, the traps during weighted dips, and the forearm muscles during a bench press. The true definition of a compound movement is a movement that demands involvement of multiple joints.

Compound exercises include the bread and butter of an exercise program; bench presses, barbell rows, squats, overhead presses, deadlifts, pullups, lunges, chin-ups, push-ups, and exercises of that sort. Isolation exercises include movements are designed to isolate a specific joint from other muscle groups; for instance, lateral raises, shrugs, barbell curls, triceps extensions, calf raises, leg extensions, hamstring curls, and wrist work. One of the biggest benefits to compound movements is the coordination it creates between muscles. When you perform a vertical leap, you are working muscles in accordance to a natural movement; the quads are involved, the hamstrings, the glutes, the calves, the core, and basically muscle groups that make up the lower body. Compound movements create this coordination by teaching joints and muscles to work together. When you perform a squat, you're teaching the hamstrings to stabilize when coming down in a natural movement; you're teaching the quads to work with the glutes and coordinate those lower body muscles. When you perform a leg extension, you're isolating the quadriceps from the muscles they were designed to coordinate with and its basically going to be useless strength in the real world. That's not to say that isolations do not serve a purpose; they do and I'll get around to that point later in the article.

The next benefit given by compound movements that isolations do not do is the ability to overload multiple muscle groups at the same time. What is "overload" I bet you're asking? Well "overload" pretty much defines itself in its only pronunciation. Overload means to work a body system harder than it is accustomed to working. If you workout with 225 lbs 3 straight work outs you have failed to give the muscle something new to grow from. If the muscle is not forced to work harder each time it gives the gym, what is expected to grow? Nothing, it will only homeostasis, which means, to the stay same size. When you perform a bench press, while it's commonly referred to as a "chest exercise", you're always working the pectoralis minor, triceps, anterior deltoids, rhomboids, trapeziums, forearm muscles, and core. Think about it, the body works in accordance to its function. What is the function of pushing in front? The force is being generated from the pectoralis major as the agonist, which means prime mover; yet, at the same time, it also requires you to push, which means extending the elbows and that is the primary function of the triceps. When you teach the pushing muscles coordination, they will learn to work together in everyday tasks. This is called "functional strength". "Functional" meaning it has potential carryover into the real world.

The next benefit of compound movement training is probably the most important for mass development and that is the anabolic hormone release of testosterone. Testosterone is a steroid hormone, produced in the male body, predominantly more in the female body and is believed to be the principle cause that your average man is stronger than your average woman. In order to release testosterone, the hypothalamus must release a substance to the pituitary gland called gaunadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). The formation of this hormone causes the pituitary gland to produce two other hormones, FSH and LH, collectively known as gonadotropins. LH is released into the bloodstream where it travels to the testicles and triggers the production of testosterone from cholesterol. So, when someone tells you to avoid eggs and meats, make sure you do not listen. Testosterone is released in the testicles when the body is under significant tension, it is released into the bloodstream and pumped into muscles. The reason blood is pumped into muscles is because oxygen must be present to produce energy inside of the mitochondria of a muscle; it's called aerobic energy. In the mitochondria, oxygen is carried to the muscles on a protein molecule called hemoglobin and it allows for ATP replenishment. When the blood reaches the muscle and testosterone reaches, it sneaks into the production of contractile proteins in the myofibrils (cylindrical organelles), found within the muscle cells. When contractile proteins multiply, the muscle is about to produce more force; therefore, is able to get stronger.

In these compound movements there are two movements that release more testosterone than any other exercises; these exercises are squats and deadlifts. No study has conducted which exercise has a greater anabolic release; however, there are many opinions and they usually differ from each person. Deadlifts work more muscles and show a greater display of overall strength; squats put a greater display of constant tension on the body from the isometric contraction of having to stabilize the weight on your back. The back squats frequency will increase the demand placed on the body have a consistent boost of testosterone; so the gains on a program where your lower body is worked with more frequency than a conventional split will have better overall gains.

**Program
I wrote-up a program real fast that I would recommend for someone that is just getting into training. You don't have to try this, as long as your program contains similar movements and principles:

Workout A:
1. Squat
2. Bench
3. Stiff-leg deadlift or Clean Variation
4. Barbell Row
5. Hanging Leg Raises

Workout B:
1. Squat
2. OHP
3. Deadlift
4. Pullup
5. Hanging Leg Raises

The program contains a horizontal push/pull, vertical push/pull, squat, deadlift, and optional clean variation for powerlifters, Olympic lifters, or athletes. For rep range, I'd just go with something like 5x5 or 4x5 and keep things simple.

**Principles
Routine principles are both underrated and overrated at the same time. I'm aware that I say that as an oxymoron but some principles are overrated such as "fatigue". Far too often people think you must train to absolute failure when in reality; it is used as a tool. The most under-looked principle there is progressive overload. Since the discussion of overload was gone over in an earlier paragraph; we can conclude the importance of it to gaining muscle. The only principle you should accustom to yourself as a beginner is the progressive resistance principle; what this means, is essentially a method of adding weight each workout. Assuming caloric requirements have been met this will make the muscle respond accordingly to the tension placed upon it. So if you came in the gym and squatted 225 on Monday, aim for 230 on Wednesday.

**Nutrition
It really depends on things like your goals, metabolism, and frame. If your goal is to bulk, like most people should, try to get a gram of protein in for every lb of lean bodyweight. Let's remember nutrition is the single most important thing for building muscle; let's also remember that if you do not increase your calories weekly you will not gain weight and will not continue to build muscle. Your bodyweight *'s 16 = your daily requirements. Increase by 200 if you have a fast metabolism and decrease by 200 if you have a slow metabolism. If you have sedentary lifestyle, take off another 100; if you have a job that requires a lot of movement, add 100. If your goal is to gain weight increase that by 500 and if your goal is to lose weight decrease that by 500. If you don't like the idea of cars for cutting the Paleo diet or no carbs after 5PM will work wonders for you. Make sure your carb and fat intake are higher than your protein (when cutting) to avoid ammonia and nitrogen accumulation. For supplements, just take a multi-vitamin like animal pak and/or some whey protein; creatine can be left optional but it's not always necessary.

Remember to work your exact reverse; for instance, what you push from your body pull from your body. If you are benching, start rowing; if you are doing overhead presses, start doing pullups. This method will prevent your joints from becoming imbalanced and balance the activity of the shoulder and the antagonists to pushing muscles to prevent RC injuries. So remember, the most important exercises are deadlifts, squats, benches, barbell rows, presses, and pullups; anything more is not needed but of course can be left optional depended upon other requirements; for instance, if you're an athlete cleans are beneficial and if you're a 50 yard dash sprinter calf raises can help.

Hope this helps.

Healthy Eating and Exercise Regime For Quick Weight Loss

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

The problem with many diet plans is that they are too restrictive, too complicated to follow, or both. Diets often fail because most people find them hard to stick to for the long-term. Rather than eating to lose weight, it is much better idea to eat for health. Healthy eating is a lifestyle change that you can become accustomed to after a short period of time. When you make eating healthy a habit, you will no longer have to stress over what to eat and whether it is good for you.

Healthy Eating and Exercise Regime For Quick Weight Loss

Weight issues also become less of a problem. There are many types of healthy eating plans to follow but the ones below are ones that I favor most. Of course you should speak with your health care provider before changing your eating habits or exercise regime.

Healthy Eating Plans for a Lifestyle Change

Developing good eating habits can make life so much easier. You learn how to maintain a healthy weight and how to manage food rather than letting food mange you. Two good methods of eating are "clean eating" and the paleolithic diet. Both are similar in that they do not include processed foods. Processed foods often contain high amounts of fat, sugar, and calories. Simple carbs like bread, cereal, rice, and pasta tend to be the foods that keep us overweight.

They are often eaten in excess. When they are not burned, they are stored as fat. Think about a typical day of meals. Breakfast may consist of cereal, a bagel, etc. Lunch may be a sandwich or pasta. Dinner may be more bread, pasta, rice, etc. Desserts can be cake, pie, cookies, ice cream, or other. These simple carbs add up quickly in a day.

Following the eating plans of clean eating or the paleo diet may help you to reach your weight loss goals in a healthy way that you can stick to for the long-term.

Exercise to Burn Fat

Any exercise is better than none at all, however, there are some that do a better job at fat burning than others. Three great fat burning activities include strength training, calisthenics, and interval training. All three of these exercise routines burn fat by developing muscle. Muscle burns both fat and calories. Even when we are at rest, our muscle burn calories.

The best thing about these exercises is that you do not need to spend more than an hour working out. You also do not need to spend money on gym memberships. Combining your healthy eating habits with fat burning exercises will have you on your way to permanent weight loss.

The Paleo Solution For Weight Loss, Health And Better Skin Tone

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

What is the Paleo solution? Well the Paleo diet is a better way of eating that keeps us healthier and at a weight that is natural. It is no secret the many of the foods we eat contribute to many of the health problems we have today. There was a time way back in history when there was no diabetes, cancer, heart disease or high blood pressure. Studies have show that in the Paleolithic era these disorders did not exist.

The Paleo Solution For Weight Loss, Health And Better Skin Tone

You have to ask yourself, why? Further studies showed that these disorders didn't start showing up until we started introducing dairy and grains to our diet. Add to that today's processing of food and you get a lot of stuff that our bodies were not made to ingest. Because our bodies can't digest or process these foods properly they tend to poison our system, which comes out in different ways.

The Paleo solution takes us back to the days when man lived off of Mother Nature by eating the natural foods Mother Nature produced. However, the Paleo diet plan is more then just the fruits and vegetables you might think of when natural foods are talked about, it also includes lean meats, and organs like liver, beef heart and others. Nuts, seeds and seafood can also be had on this diet so you can see there is a large variety of foods for you to choose from, which gives you a large variety of meals you can prepare from them.

Eating the Paleo foods will not only keep you healthy, it will also help with your weight loss if you're trying to lose weight. Since these foods are what we are supposed to be eating in the first place they are easy for our bodies to digest and process so you don't get a build up of fat and eventually you get down to a weight that is natural for you.

You also don't get a build up of the poisons that our body tries to expel through the skin, which causes acne and other skin blemishes and disorders.

I'm not trying to tell you that the Paleo solution is the total solution to all of your health and weight problems, but it sure is a big help on the way to solving many of them. If you break it down to the basics you see that this diet is a healthy way to lose weight without having to starve yourself in the process and with the right Paleo cookbook you can do it deliciously.

Are you ready to take the Paleo challenge?

What Is Paleo Diet? Paleo Principles for Success!

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

You've heard of the Paleo Diet, but aren't quite sure what it is or if it could be the right plan to help you reach all of your health and fitness goals. You will never know for sure until you answer one question: what is Paleo Diet?

What Is Paleo Diet? Paleo Principles for Success!

The Paleo Diet is simply a diet that limits your food consumption to foods that would have been readily available to people living in the Paleolithic era of human life. These were the days of cavemen hunting and gathering for their own survival. They did not farm for a living and they were more transient than we are today. They remained in one area until the natural resources were picked over, then they picked up and moved somewhere else. With time, those areas would repopulate with plants, trees and animals and another group of humans would eventually move back in and start living.

The food in those days was limited to animals that could be killed and eggs, nuts, berries, and vegetables that could be gathered in the forests and fields. Eggs were available, but not in high quantities. Berries, roots, leaves and nuts were readily available and were thus staples. Meat was available most of the time, but men would have to work long and hard to bring enough back enough meat to sustain their families.

Some things you have to keep in mind are the following:

  • Cavemen did not farm, so their carbohydrate intake was limited to fresh produce that they could collect.
  • They did not have refrigeration in this age, so they had to eat their food before it went bad.
  • Heating was very basic in this age, so advanced methods of cooking were unthinkable. They relied upon a lot of fresh, whole foods in their natural state.

Despite these differences from our current world, people in this era were incredibly healthy. They did not have the problems with heart disease, cancer and obesity that we have today. This probably had as much to do with the amount of exercise that humans got, just as much as the healthy diet that they consumed.

If you can strike that balance in your own life, you can see dramatic changes in your body. You can even see huge changes in the amount of energy you have and how you feel getting out of bed every day.

The great thing about the Paleo Diet is it can be enjoyed by virtually anyone. Vegetarians have no trouble finding tons of foods that they can enjoy even with the elimination of meat and fish. Those who don't normally enjoy vegetables learn to season and spice their produce so it goes perfectly with their lean protein.

You can also choose how closely you follow the diet. Many people start with this question: what is Paleo Diet? Yet they end with this question: how can I modify this diet so it fits the foods that I enjoy and my lifestyle? These are the people who end up being successful on the Paleo Diet.

Start out by getting a detailed food list for the plan and then decide how you can make the basic plan fit your life. This is how you go from starting out on a new diet to following a healthier lifestyle for the rest of your life. That is how you lose weight and maintain it for the rest of your life.

An Extensive List Of Paleo Foods To Make Your Paleo Journey Easier

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

Do you sometimes sit back and think about the foods that cavemen lived on? I certainly do. Did you know that these foods that cavemen consumed years ago genetically determined what our bodies consider as nutritious today? We refer to this diet our ancestors survived on as the paleo diet. Meals in accordance with this diet are prepared with ingredients our ancestors consumed during the paleolithic period, and consequently our bodies have gotten used to consuming these foods because humans have already been eating it for 1.5 million years. This list includes paleo foods such as lean meat, fish and other seafood, fruits, leafy vegetables, root vegetables and nuts and seeds. If you notice, these foods are natural foods created by nature, not man made, processed foods.

An Extensive List Of Paleo Foods To Make Your Paleo Journey Easier

As you've already guessed, the foods we are told to stay away from while on the paleo diet are man made foods which were created by way of agriculture. Foods along the lines of grains, sugar, some crops, oils and butter like milk and cheese. We are told to stay away from these foods because agriculture was formulated around 10,000 years ago, and for this reason our body hasn't had a lot of time to get used to eating them. Think about it, why is that we always hear about people having stomach issues with dairy products? You see, dairy was not a key item in the caveman diet because animal domestication wasn't used yet. So items such as cheese and so forth weren't available during that time.

Below is a list of paleo foods that you are allowed to eat while following the diet. Keep in mind that having knowledge of these foods will reduce the time you have to spend learning and creating recipes.

Fruits: There exists no limitations on the amount of fruits you are allowed to consume the paleo diet. Fruits such as apples, blueberries, grapes, grapefruits, mangoes, oranges, watermelons, tangerines, banana, avocado, and basically any other fruits you could think of is acceptable to eat. However, for anybody who is attempting to lose weight on the paleo diet, it is advisable to limit the amount of fruits you consume daily as they naturally contain sugar.

Leafy vegetables: Vegetables work as your source of calories and vegetables. It is best to plan your intake based on the amount of energy you expend daily. If you have a very active lifestyle, be sure to consume more calories and carbohydrates so that your body will receive its required amount of energy. Such examples include spinach, lettuce, mustard greens, collard greens, dandelion and a lot more.

Root veggies: Your root vegetables are going to be foods like carrots, turnips, artichokes, beets, yams, taters etc. Many individuals get confused about the potatoes. Unfortunately, only sweet potatoes are allowed on the diet, not regular potatoes.

Meats: The type of meats you eat consume will be from plant-eating animals and lean meats. Other meats like hot dogs and sausages are to be avoided. Examples of paleo friendly meats are London broils, flank steak, top sirloin steak, pork, chicken breast, turkey breast, and any other game meat. It is wise to trim the fats off your meats. For poultry take off the skin and eat only the white meat.

Seafood: Examples of acceptable fish are bass, salmon, cod, tilapia, tuna, trout and practically all forms of seafood are permitted on your paleo diet.

Nuts and Seeds: These are likely going to be your snacks while on the caveman diet. These are great because they are delicious to snack on while also providing your body with healthy fats and oil. Examples include almonds, sunflower seeds, macadamia nuts, sesame seeds, cashers, pistachios, walnuts, pecans and a lot more.

Hard-Hitting, Unconventional Diet Advice For Singers

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking this is going to be another one of those predictable, vanilla articles about foods you should and shouldn't eat before singing. Boooring!

Hard-Hitting, Unconventional Diet Advice For Singers

The conventional advice that we singers often hear about diet goes something like this:

DO:

  • Drink Water (room temperature)
  • Eat Fruit
  • Eat Vegetables

Do NOT Consume:

  • Caffeine
  • Dairy
  • Hot Beverages
  • Cold beverages
  • Alcohol
  • Salt
  • High Fat Foods
  • Spicy Foods
  • Citrus

You know what you really ought not to consume? The generic kool aid above! Instead, let's look at some actionable strategies, which are rooted in a lifetime of dietary experimentation, that's taken me from a Standard American Diet (SAD), to vegetarianism, to veganism, to fruitarianism, to the slow carb diet a la Tim Ferriss, to what I follow now (modified paleo). In addition to years of OCD self-tracking, blood testing and subjecting myself to various supplementation regimens, I'm also drawing on my experience as a competitive athlete (submission grappling), and since singing is a sport in its own right, I hope these parallels ring true for you.

Let's start with first principles

A singer is, above all, a human being. Agreed? Human beings are a species of animal, which has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to consume a very specific type of diet. This isn't even actually a "diet", that's a word invented to sell books and ab machines. This is simply our natural way of eating and it has profound implications for our health and quality of life.

Have you seen what happens when you feed a cat (or a dog for that matter) a vegetarian diet? It gets sick, weak, and lethargic. It loses its desire to mate(!) and dies prematurely. This is called a "failure to thrive". If a human animal is fed the wrong things, what do you suppose happens to it?

About 10,000 years ago, humans began farming and went from a nomadic tribal lifestyle, to a relatively stationary, city-based lifestyle. Consequently, we transitioned from our ancestral diet of mostly animal foods to a high-carb diet of grains and other farmed foods. Because we were able to grow our food almost year-round, we could stay in one location and reduce the need to hunt wild game and gather nuts, berries, tubers and roughage.

Unfortunately, our bodies were not (and still aren't) adapted to eating grains (they're toxic), high levels of fruits (also toxic), and many raw vegetables. Like the example of the vegetarian cat, we've been consuming the wrong things for roughly ten millennia and have been getting sicker and sicker as a result. Pile on top of that the modern laundry list of synthetic chemicals we're routinely exposed to, stressful work schedules, and sedentary, indoor-based living and you have a MAJOR failure to thrive.

You see, most diet and lifestyle advice you hear for singers is generic and incomplete at best, totally wrong at worst. A singer's actual vocal instrument is certainly important but any professional singer can tell you that it's only half the story. Being an effective singer and musician requires mental and physical endurance that has nothing to do with your voice per se. "Don't smoke, don't drink yourself stupid and don't party your ass off 5 days a week" is fairly common sense advice that you'll learn on your own. But the advice below is of a more counter-intuitive nature, and not only will you not hear it very often, but you'll be told the exact opposite!

So here's the deal: Singers need a steady supply of even-keeled energy, enthusiasm, mental acuity, memory, plasticity of thinking and nerves of steel when it comes time to go on stage.

So, then, how should you eat if you're a singer? The answer is, the same way you would eat if you weren't one! The idea of a profession-specific diet is actually quite ridiculous. Yes, certain tweaks and allowances have to be made based on activity levels and genetics, but fundamentally the healthiest diet is the one that most closely approximates your ancestral way of eating. This way of eating is popularly known as a "paleolithic" or "paleo" diet and here's what it can do for you:

  • Increased energy
  • Longer life
  • Higher sex drive
  • Improved mental acuity
  • Improved physical performance
  • Weight normalization
  • Improved appearance

Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, going back to the vegetarian cat example. If the gato is being fed a 50/50 mixture of vegetables and meat, it's only going to be somewhat sick as a result. If you feed it nothing but meat, which is what its body is designed to operate most optimally with, kitty shall experience all of the same benefits that I listed above and return to good health (all other things being equal). Likewise, if YOU begin removing foods from your diet that work against your genetics and replace them with the high-quality foods that your body was meant to operate on, you too will experience a very noticeable shift in your overall health. This, you might imagine, has tremendous ramifications for your art.

Here's an overview of the protocol:

DO Consume:

  • Water
  • Grass fed, pastured, organic meats
  • Pastured organic eggs
  • Cold water, wild caught fish (Salmon, cod, sardines, mackerel)
  • Grass fed butter, ghee, coconut oil
  • Nuts (no peanuts - they're legumes)
  • Vegetables
  • Small quantities of low-sugar fruits (berries and citrus are good choices)

Do NOT Consume:

  • Any grain based foods including bread, pastas, rice, quinoa, etc.
  • High sugar fruit such as mangoes, pineapples and bananas
  • Dairy
  • Legumes (beans of any kind)
  • Alcohol (I don't take this rule too seriously - you've got to live a little!)

Basically, if you mostly stay away from sugars and starches (which are just sugars anyway), and eat plenty of high quality animal products, you're going to notice a huge improvement in your well-being and outward appearance relatively quickly. If you're a big bread and pasta eater, cutting carbs out is going to be difficult, so do it gradually. Once you've weened off the carbs, you'll notice that your energy levels and mood will be quite steady throughout the day, because you're no longer subjecting your body to the insulin rollercoaster that carbohydrates put in motion. If you try to become a paleo perfectionist, you're probably setting yourself up for some serious binge eating. A great idea to that Tim Ferriss introduced in his awesome book "4 Hour Body", which can help you circumvent binging, is the concept of a "cheat day" once a week, during which you eat whatever the hell you want! That way it's already planned and not some big monkey on your back that comes to wreck your diet whimsically.

One singer-specific piece of advice you hear a lot is to avoid eating a lot of fat. Well, that's a lot of bull. A high fat diet is incredibly healthful. Fats are the primary energy source the body is meant to use (NOT sugars!!!) So cook some eggs in butter and a few strips of bacon for breakfast. While your jam and toast eating colleague is passing out from the sugar crash, you'll still be going like some sort of singing Energize bunny.

Unfortunately, because our soils are largely depleted of nutrients, our animals are fed nutrient-poor feeds, and for a number of other reasons, we simply can NOT get all of the nutrition we need solely from food, even if it's the RIGHT food. Thus, it's necessary to supplement and hack a little. Here are 4 important additions to the diet outlined above that will take your mind and body - and thus, your singing! - to the next level:

Fish Oil

Fish oil is high in omega 3 fatty acids, which curb cellular inflammation and keeps you young and healthy. Much of the food we consume now is very high in omega 6 fats, and this has skewed the natural ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s with which our bodies are built to function optimally. Fish oil is relatively cheap, painless to take and has profound health benefits. Don't be afraid to take several grams of fish oil a day. It won't hurt you - just make sure you find a brand that tests for contaminants by third parties. Unlike, say, exercise, this one's a gimme.

Vitamin D

We are meant to spend copious amounts of time in the sun (naked). Instead, we spend an unhealthy amount of time indoors (clothed). Since our body produces vitamin D in response to sunlight exposure, this explains why the majority of our population is severely vitamin D deficient. Even in perennially sunny South Florida, the majority of the population is deficient! I can't overemphasize how powerful this group of compounds is (vitamin D is the name of the family of compounds called secosteroids). They influence everything from hormone levels to alertness to immunity.

Getting tested for vitamin D deficiency is cheap and easy, or just get blood drawn if you're insured). Definitely test your levels prior to supplementing. Shoot for about 55ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter) of blood. If you've determined that you need to supplement, make sure that you take D3 (cholecalciferol) and not D2 (ergocalciferol). You'll be fine taking up to 5000 IU a day. Adjust commensurate with sun exposure and retest levels every few months until optimal.

Sleep

We are a severely sleep-deprived species. Yet sleep is a fundamental component of great health and proper functioning. You already know this on an intuitive level, but the pressure from society to "fit everything in" is so strong, that we often eschew sleep as a waste of time. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your singing voice goes straight to hell when you haven't had enough sleep, as does your concentration, memory and general "springiness". More sleep, and better quality sleep means you get more mileage out of your waking hours. It's a counter-intuitive concept (not really - we've just been culturally programmed to silence our powerful intuition). Forcing yourself awake is short-sighted; you're going on borrowed time. Nature will have her way with you eventually, and you'll find the reduced quality of your output doesn't justify the extra hours you stuffed in.

Exercise

You knew this one was coming! But don't worry, you need not exercise nearly as much as you may think. You can trigger the powerful hormonal cascade responses that improve your health and well being with rather minimalistic exercise routines. I suggest a kettlebell workout twice a week, or a "Peak 8" regimen. It's important that you do some kind of weight training, even if you're a woman. Running on a treadmill for 2 hours is a joke; you could get better results in terms of both appearance and health from 1 kettlebell session per week. The benefits? EVERYTHING.

Remember: you're a human first and a singer second, so eat the healthiest diet possible and you'll be the best singer possible - simple! Stick with this idea of "first principles" and you'll also have the tools to untangle even the most complicated of knots as you progress along your journey in music....

Is Grass Fed Beef Really Better Than Grain Fed Beef?

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

Grass fed beef has become more increasingly popular due to the various health benefits it provides. While commercialized beef is has high fat percentages, grass fed beef is lean and is full of nutrients. It's actually a great way to add protein in your diet despite the fact beef has been given a bad reputation for contributing to weight gain and obesity. Let's take a look at some of the reasons why grass fed is better than grain fed beef.

Is Grass Fed Beef Really Better Than Grain Fed Beef?

Fat Content: According to scientific studies, grain fed beef cuts contain high fat content ranging from 35-75% and most of the fat is saturated. This imbalance in the fat content of the meat places one in higher risks for health problems when eaten frequently. Beef from grass fed cattle on the other hand has been known to contain lower fat contents ideal for our diet. In terms of saturated fat, usually it has less than 10% making it not only safe but also healthy even if you eat it multiple times a week.

Nutritional Value: Grain fed beef is usually injected with growth hormones to quickly fatten their cattle's in order to increase production and meet market demands. This form of faster production however, drastically drops the quality of the meat in all aspects. Grass eating cattle on the other hand are provided with nothing but high-protein, low starch forages, in combination to clean water and exercise making the meat leaner and more nutritious.

Effects: When comparing beef from grass grazing cattle and grain fed cattle, the most noticeable difference will be in its long term effects on your health. Eating beef from grain fed cows will frequently contribute not only to increasing chances on the occurrence of health related issues (like heart disease) but also obesity. Beef from grass-fed cattle on the other hand, will not only promote well being but also helps individuals to lose/retain weight. CLA is the reason for this.

CLA or conjugated linoleic acid has been known show promise in helping individuals lose or maintain their weight - along with exercise and diet programs of course. Aside from weight benefits, CLA has also been found to fight and ward off the development of cancer cells on the body. And in terms of comparison, it has been found that free roaming cattle's have up to 5 times more of this nutrient compared to their grain fed counterparts.

No matter how you look at it, grass fed beef blows grain fed beef out of the water. Quality, nutritional value, flavor, distinction - in all of these aspects, grass fed beef has the upper hand. Interested? Search the internet and look for online stores that sell quality meat from grass grazing cattle. Many stores offer quick shipping and guarantee that your shipment is frozen or you get your money back. It's a reliable way to get grass fed beef if your local supermarket isn't offering it.

Salt and the Paleo Diet

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

There's a lot of contention in the health world over the amount of sodium allowable in a diet. Nowhere is this idea more widely debated than in paleo dieting. If you look through the wide assortment of paleo cookbooks out there, you'll see what I mean. While some use salt in almost every recipe, others strictly forbid it.

Salt and the Paleo Diet

The problem with salt in the paleo diet is that paleo purists believe that the body was created to digest only those things that existed during the lifetime of the earliest man, the Paleolithic era. Because salt was not introduced to the human diet until long after that, they forbid it in their diets and urge others to do the same.

However, some argue that just because it was not used doesn't mean that it didn't exist. It was available in the form of evaporated sea salt and salt deposits. Early man just lacked the forethought or means utilize it.

So, why does any of this matter? The debate over sodium is not limited to just those paleoites arguing over it's origin or some inconsequential evolutionary timeline. It's a debate that has sparked nationwide talks over the last food years.

Because the long-term effects of high-sodium consumption have been linked to such diseases as stroke, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, edema and stomach cancer, many experts believe that stricter guidelines are need for healthy consumption.

The FDA recommends that the average person consume no more than 2300mg of sodium per day (1500mg for people over 51, African-Americans or people with hypertension, diabetes or chronic kidney disease), but studies show that the average American gets between 3400 and 4700mg per day, and that an "estimated 75 percent of the average consumer's intake comes from packaged foods." (according to Food Navigator-USA )

For this reason, in 2010 New York City launched the National Salt Reduction Initiative, a campaign which urged food manufacturers to voluntarily reduce the sodium content of their products. The long-term goal is to see a 25% reduction across the board by 2015. This campaign has been met with a high amount of success, thanks in large part to the support and championing for the cause by First Lady Michelle Obama.

To the untrained eye, these all seem like great measures and reducing your sodium consumption to the lowest levels possible would just be icing on the health cake. Unfortunately, this a very flawed idea. To explain why, we need to look at what exactly sodium does on a biological level.

Sodium is a mineral, and an essential one at that. It regulates blood volume and blood pressure and our primary source of sodium is salt. For minimal function, the body requires at least 500mg. Too little sodium in the body can lead to muscle cramps, dizziness, neurological problems, or even death. Increased water consumption with insufficient sodium levels can cause a condition known as hyponatremia, or water intoxication.

In the average diet, eliminating sodium is an unwise decision, but for paleo dieters, a large population of which are athletes, the elimination of sodium from the diet can be life-threatening. When you sweat, you lose sodium deposits in your system, and when you rehydrate on a sodium-deprived system, your risk of water intoxication goes way up.

The best way to manage sodium in your diet is just to cut out processed packaged foods. Stick to foods that are fresh and freshly prepared. Don't be afraid to salt your food while cooking or eating, but be wary of recipes that call for huge amounts of it, and eat salted or cured meats in moderation. Drink plenty of water, but don't go overboard. The general rule is one ounce of water per two pounds of body weight, slightly more if you sweat a lot. If you have a high-salt day, compensate by boosting your potassium intake, which can help offset the negative effects of the sodium.

How The "Paleo For Life" Philosophy Has Worked For Me So Far

,
Paleo Diet To Lose Weight :

I have always been aware of food and what constitutes a healthy and complete meal, where in my teens I began to study to nutrition. I thought of learning as a way of mastering another part of my life. I began by reading about nutrition and what was actually in food.

How The "Paleo For Life" Philosophy Has Worked For Me So Far

Food, I learned, was an incredibly complex stuff. It had lots of different components and many, many variables. However, I learned that the simpler the food, the better it was for you. This ultimately led me to the Paleo diet, which I have adopted as my eating for the body philosophy. I redesigned my entire eating idea around simple food which could have been gathered by our long passed ancestors.

Because of the almost overnight adoption of the diet, I encountered some very specific happenings with my body. For the most part, these issues were related to the sudden decrease in carbohydrates.

For the first two weeks of the Paleo diet adoption phase, I experienced quite drastic energy level fluctuations. This was due to the decrease in overall carbohydrate consumption. My body was learning that its primary source of carbs had changed, and so I was in a carbohydrate slump.

This was only temporary though, as my body soon learned to expect carbohydrates from the large volumes of vegetables I was now eating. While I stuck to the Paleo diet for the most part, I sometimes felt the need to introduce some legumes, such as beans and lentils into my meals. This made a massive difference to me physically, as because I exercise regularly, I was in an almost constant caloric deficit. This was not good, thankfully, the new twist on the Paleo diet allowed for caloric boosts which would often power me through the day, and then keep me going right into my exercise.

What physical changes have I noticed while being on the Paleo diet?

I noticed that almost immediately after adopting the diet, I started to lose weight. I am around 6ft 3 and weigh in the region of 200 pounds. I have relatively low muscle mass because of always doing cardio based workouts, but at the start of the diet I had a high amount of body fat.

That fat was specifically located on my stomach and legs, one of the most common fat storage areas on men. I noticed that a combination of a low-carbohydrate diet and an exercise like cycling, my legs were stripped of pretty much all their fat. If I had to estimate, I would say that I dropped around 4-7% body fat in my first month.

That was easy easy fat loss, and I continue to passively lose fat while enjoying eating large amounts of food. There is a psychological element here I'll explore later on in this short article. I continued to lose fat around my legs, hips and stomach. While I still haven't lost all the fat on my stomach, I have decreased my fat percentage from around 28% to around 18%.

Remember, most of this fat loss is achieved by doing no exercise at all.

That is the psychological element I was referring to earlier. You can eat as much good, Paleo food as you want, and still you wont put on fat. You'll just keep stripping fat because for the most part, humans don't really need carbohydrates as much as we think, or as much as we are TOLD we do.

Don't listen to what you have been told constitutes a healthy diet. Anything white, or anything that could be white should not be eaten. Bar eggs, cauliflower and white food on binge days. Binge days? Yup.

While the Paleo diet and the subsequent Paleo lifestyle have changed my life, I wanted to keep this article relatively brief, I'll chat about the other changes in some subsequent, follow up articles, or perhaps I'll make them a series.

Keep well,

Andrew
